Description

Merino wool balaclava for babies and kids

Dive into cosy adventures with our bestseller: the ManyMonths® Natural Woollies balaclava, knitted in stretchy, ribbed merino wool.

Stays in place with an integrated elastic, and warms both the head and neck.

Ultimate Comfort: A dream for nap times. The back elastic is entirely encased in soft wool, and flat seams keep the fit snug yet gentle. The stretchy rib adapts to every head shape.

Ideal for Babywearing: Snug and secure in the carrier, and almost impossible for little hands to pull off. No straps or fasteners to fuss with.

Helmet-Friendly & Convertible: A perfect fit under snowsuit hoods as well as ski, bike and other helmets. Wear it as a balaclava, or pulled down like a hood around the neck.

All-Weather Wonder: On its own in mild weather, and under a hat or hood when it freezes: cosy and comfortable whatever the forecast.

Soft & Sensible: Soft, stretchy merino wool rib that adapts to changing temperatures and keeps body warmth steady, in every season.

Breathable & Low-Maintenance: Wool cleans itself naturally, so a simple airing is usually enough to refresh the hood between washes.

Adorable design and real everyday function: no wonder it is our bestseller. Also available with cute ears, a ruffle or dinosaur spikes in our UNiQUE versions.

What Families Say: “Elephant Hood is the best thing! Stays in place perfectly. Thin enough but warm. Sits perfectly. Not itching or too tight.” (Anna, Finland)

Complete the Look: Long Cuff Mittens and Adjustable Winter Booties.

Why Natural Merino Wool?

Warm Without Overheating: Cosy in the cold and comfortable when the weather turns milder.
Breathable on Active Days: Wool absorbs sweat and lets it evaporate, and stays warm even when damp.
Soft on the Skin: Smooth and comfortable, nothing like the wool jumpers you remember.
Less Washing: Wear daily, wash seldom. Wool naturally resists dirt and odours, and airing outdoors is usually enough.

Sizing

  • NewComer (0-3/4 months): up to 43/44 cm head circumference
  • Charmer/Explorer (3-12/18 months): ca 43-48 cm head circumference
  • Adventurer/Conqueror (1-4.5/5 years): ca 46-54 cm head circumference
  • Innovator (5-7/7.5 years): ca 52-56 cm head circumference
  • Enthusiast & Beyond (8 years to adult): ca 54-59 cm head circumference

The rib relaxes somewhat in use and grows with the child. Between two sizes, choose the larger one. The NewComer size is made without the back elastic, so it is easier to put on the youngest babies who still need neck support. The Enthusiast & Beyond size has no back elastic either, so it fits older children and adults of different heights.

See our Size Guide for help choosing the right size.

Material

  • 100% merino wool rib in Expedition weight (approx. 380 gsm), custom-knitted with natural built-in stretch
  • Merino wool rib and all trims, from labels and threads to buttons and zips, tested for harmful substances to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class I: the strictest class, made for baby articles. Tested every year since the 2017/2018 collection
  • Mulesing-free merino wool, free from superwash and moth treatments, coloured with safe dyes

Care Instructions
  • Hand wash or machine wash at a max. temperature of 30°C on a gentle wool cycle
  • When washing by hand, do not wring. Instead, press into a towel to remove excess water or machine spin at 400 rpm
  • Shape while damp and lay flat to dry
  • Do not tumble dry or bleach
  • We recommend airing wool garments outside to refresh them. It's unnecessary to wash after every use.
  • Use an enzyme-free wool detergent when washing your Natural Woollies, and let them rest between uses
  • Pure merino rib without elastane relaxes a little with wear and regains its shape in the wash

Manufacturer
  • Our manufacturing partner since 2005 is EcoTextile, a Scandinavian-owned, GOTS-certified sewing workshop in China.
  • EcoTextile has taken care of making our Natural Woollies since 2007. Their GOTS certification covers both environmental and social responsibility.

Design
  • Designed in Finland by our head designer Bettina Lindblom, who founded our company in 2002 and has created the MaM® Design and ManyMonths® brands.
  • Bettina is a mum of three with a master's degree in education. She has studied developmental and social psychology and taught social psychology at university. Our clothes are designed for how children develop, not just how tall they grow, with attachment parenting at heart.
  • Inspired by the four distinct Nordic seasons and made for family life all year round: from sunny days at the seaside to snowy weekends in the mountains, and cosy warmth at home on chilly winter days.
